In the fall semester of 2007 I attended the Dow Jones Private Equity Conference in New York, NY. The cost of attendance was somewhere around $2,800 which I knew the business school would not fund, so I sent the organizers an email asking if they would allow me to attend the conference in exchange for helping out with the conference. They let me attend in exchange for my help (which totaled about 10 minutes) and registered me for the conference so I received all the benefits that the other attendees did.
The conference itself was amazing. The location was the Waldorf Astoria near Grand Central Station in NY. It was beautiful. There were many important people there both speaking and attending. I met a lot of people who were definitely in the top 1% of earners in the United States. Some of the speakers included David Rubenstein, Hamilton James, John Thain, Paul Gigot, and many more. At least two of the speakers were in the Forbes 400. There were many opportunities for networking. I actually met three people who were graduates from KU. It was neat to see people from around here, and also it made it easy to connect with a couple people. I ended up with about 20 business cards and a great experience.
